Upcoming Visit From Author Barbara Kingscote

January 16th, 2008
Thanks to the Friends of the Library, Marmora will have the opportunity to revisit an aquaintance from years gone by. In 1949 Barbara Kingscote travelled across Canada in an unconventional manner...by horseback. Marmora was among the towns she visited, and she is happy to return to read exerpts from her book Ride the Rising Wind: One Woman's Journey Across Canada.

Please join us in the William Shannon Room (Library building) on Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 at 7:00pm to welcome Barbara back to our community.

For more information please visit The Friends of the Library.

Welcome to 2008!

January 16th, 2008
The holidays are over, children are back to school, and our hours and program schedules are back to normal. 2007 was an exciting year at the library with a new website, updates to the children's area and the William Shannon room (thanks to the Trillium Foundation) and new computers added for public use.

2008 if off to an equally exciting start with work being done to archive and eventually digitize our newspaper collection. This is a large and time consuming project, but it is well under way and we are looking forward to the end result.

As well, we are currently in the middle of updating our Library computer program. This will provide us with a newer system that will allow us to make our catalogue available over the internet. Patrons will then be able to see what titles are available and renew or reserve titles from home.

We look forward to a great year, and wish you all a wonderful 2008!

We will be closed for the holidays from Sunday, December 23rd through Tuesday, January 1st and will re-open at 3pm on Wednesday, January 2nd. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season, and we'll see you next year!

Audio-Visual Display

Marg Kitchen has added her camera and video machine collection to the display case at the library. Drop by to take a little journey through the history of these devices.

Our thanks to Chris Russell for his fishing display this summer. We appreciate his willingness to part with some of his favourite pieces of tackle for the season, and hope this didn't cause him to miss out on "the big one".

William Shannon Room Renovations Completed!

A bright and beautiful new room is now available for use by our local Seniors Group, Gateway programmes and other users. Leona Dombrowsky once again joined us for the official opening celebration, as well as local officials, library board members, and users of the room. Much needed storage space has been added, as well as a new fridge and stove. The kitchen cabinetry has been replaced and updated and the walls painted a refreshing light colour. Old carpet was torn up to reveal a beautful hardwood floor which has been refinished. To quote our Summer Staff Member, Chloe "This room just makes me feel happy when I walk in. It's so bright and cheerful!" You really can't sum it up any better than that.

These renovations were made possible by the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who worked hard to bring this project together.

Legion Display

November 1st, 2007
We are proud to host a wonderful display in honour of local men and women who bravely served their country. Our hearfelt thanks to Royal Canadian Legion Marmora Branch #237 for sharing their collection of newspaper articles, photos and war artifacts.

Ontario Public Library Week

Ontario Public Library Week is celebrated from October 15th to 21st, and coincides with Canadian Library month. An Open House will be held at the main branch on Saturday, October 21st. And to give you more reason to celebrate, fine amnesty will be in effect during the week as well. If you have overdue library material at home, this is your chance to return it without having to pay the fines. So come join us in our celebrations!

Fall Fun

Summer was filled with fun at the library, but just because the sunny season is over, it doesn't mean the fun has to end too! With the arrival of fall, the library has become a hub of activity. Homework Club is in full swing again on Wednesday evenings. Storytime is being held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, and we've also introduced Sleepytime Stories on Thursday evening. Please see our Coming Events section for more information.

Summer Is Almost Over

It's that time of year. Time for our summer staff to leave us, cottagers to go home and children to go back to school. Our thanks to all of them!

Canada Day Celebrations with Friends

The Friends of the Library will be holding a book sale at the Canada Day Celebration in the park. Drop by to support your library and pick up some great deals in the process! Watch for our float in the parade at 1:00pm. It was designed with the help of our Homework Club and features Canadian Authors.

June Storytime Fun

We had lots of fun with our June Storytime themes. On June 2nd our participants went on a pirate adventure! Stories of pirates were read followed by the chance to make a pirate hat and eye patch. As we had only girls at Storytime, we had some very pretty pink pirate outfits! We celebrated Father's day by sharing the telling of some Father related stories and making key chains for Dads and Grandpas.

Please join us for our Storytime Programme throughout the summer. For times and dates please see our Coming Events section. And don't forget about our Summer Fun Programme for older children as well!

May Storytime Fun

Young visitors enjoyed both our Mother's Day and Royalty themed May Storytimes. For Mother's Day the children made Mom a very useful and pretty recipe holder, and doorknob hangers were made for our royalty theme. For information on our June Storytime themes and times, please visit our Coming Events section.

New Books

Our library staff members and volunteers have been kept quite busy preparing a number of book orders for the shelves. So many, in fact, that an extra book shelf is needed to hold them all! Check out what's New @ the Library and call or visit to reserve your favourite title today!

Deloro Branch Open House

Drop by between 11:00am and 1:00pm on Saturday April 28, 2007 for a tour of the library and refreshments. If you haven't been in to see the new renovations yet, now is your chance. Meet Janet, our friendly Deloro staff member, and find out what our Deloro branch has to offer. We will be open extended hours, from 10:00am to 2:00pm to accommodate extra visitors.

Wireless Access

Wireless internet access is now available in the library. We hope this service will prove very useful to out-of-town visitors, researching students, and other members of the community.

Participate in the TV Turnoff Challenge

It's spring - what better time to off your televisions, video games and computers (other than for school or work purposes) and be active? Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit's TV Turnoff Challenge asks participants to do just that for 5 days from April 23rd - 27th. We will be doing our part by turning off our public access computers. They will only be available when needed for projects and work. Don't forget to pick up a good book at the library for those times when you need a little rest!

New Website

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new website!

Information about the library, news updates and coming event listings are available to all patrons. Adults can check out our new book listings, and helpful links. Kids and teens have their very own sections with games, homework help and safe website links to explore.

We hope you enjoy your visit, and come back on occasion to see what's new.

Our thanks to Kyle Russell and Chris Vesterfelt of Non-Toxic Design & Technology for volunteering to design our new internet home!

March Break Fun & Games

A good time was had by all at our two March Break Programs!

Fun & Games @ the Library took place on Friday, March 16th for children age 8-14. Participants enjoyed a presentation on the History of Video Games by Kyle Russell. Afterwards, they experienced game play throughout history. Games ranged from those played in early civilization to modern video games. The checkerboard was a popular stop on the tour, as well as the Nintendo station where Super Mario Bros. was played. Cheers to our participants for being such great sports!

On Saturday March 17th, Storytime drew quite a crowd! The children heard stories, participated in a relay race to kiss the Blarney Stone and had fun with St. Patrick's Day stickers. Many giggles were heard throughout the library, especially during the race!

Renovations

Thanks to the generous Trillium Grant our Municipality received from The Province of Ontario, we have been able to give a much needed face-lift to the Children's Activity Centre. New cabinetry surrounds the room, providing storage and work space. Work is now in progress to upgrade the William Shannon Room meeting and kitchen area, as well as addressing accessibility issues.
